On the 1st of April 2010 the Government introduced Fee-In-Tariff (FIT), which has been put in place to incentivise energy customers to install new anaerobic digestion, wind, hydro or solar renewable technology solutions on their properties/sites. This scheme is applicable to all new schemes installed after July 2009 and offers a guaranteed payback to customers via their energy supplier for the electricity generated on site, whether they choose to export it back to that supplier or use it all within their property.
The Government has a very high target to reduce greenhouse gases created by the UK by 34% before 2020 – So it comes as now surprise that this fairly dramatic intervention has been implemented, which goes above an beyond the previous renewables obligation grants imposed in previous years.
In relation to PV technology, there will be 6 tariff bands which start with the sub-4kW domestic generators at 36p per kWh (new build, retro-fit being more attractive at 41p). The remaining bands are 4-10kW (36p/kWh), 10-100kW (31p/kWh) and 100kW-5MW (29p/kWh).
The Government should be commended in taking such a big leap towards rejuvenating the troubled construction industry and adding more emphasis on zero carbon development to meet its EU commitments and targets.
