Question: What is architectural acoustics?

Answer: Architectural acoustics is the science and design discipline concerned with how sound behaves within and between buildings. It covers sound insulation between rooms and dwellings, control of external noise entering a building, room acoustics such as reverberation and speech intelligibility, and control of noise and vibration from building services.

Acoustic design consultants advise architects, developers and engineers on constructions, materials, layouts and systems that will deliver the required acoustic performance and satisfy Building Regulations, planning conditions and client standards.

Question: When is acoustic design consultancy needed?

Answer: Acoustic design input is valuable on almost any building but is particularly important for:

  • Residential developments requiring Part E sound insulation compliance

Question: What are the Building Regulations Part E requirements?

Answer: Approved Document Part E sets minimum standards for sound insulation between dwellings, within dwellings and in schools. For new-build separating walls and floors between dwellings, the minimum airborne performance is DnT,w + Ctr of 45 dB and maximum impact sound is L'nT,w of 62 dB. Compliance is demonstrated by pre-completion testing or by using Robust Details.

An acoustic consultant specifies constructions and details that will achieve these standards with an adequate margin, and can advise on higher performance where planning or BREEAM require it.

Question: What is BS 8233 and how is it used?

Answer: BS 8233:2014 provides guidance on internal noise levels in buildings. It recommends internal ambient noise levels of 35 dB LAeq,16hr in living rooms during the day and 30 dB LAeq,8hr in bedrooms at night, with guidance on external amenity areas. Planning authorities commonly condition new residential development to meet BS 8233 levels, and an acoustic consultant designs the façade glazing and ventilation strategy needed to achieve them.

Question: What is BB93 for schools?

Answer: Building Bulletin 93 (BB93) sets the acoustic performance standards for schools in England, covering indoor ambient noise, sound insulation between spaces, reverberation time and speech intelligibility. Compliance with BB93 is a requirement of Building Regulations Part E for school buildings. Acoustic consultants design teaching spaces, halls and specialist rooms to meet these criteria and carry out post-completion testing.

Question: How does acoustic design address building services noise?

Answer: Mechanical and electrical plant such as air handling units, fans, heat pumps and pumps can generate noise and vibration within a building. Acoustic consultants set noise rating (NR) criteria for each space, specify attenuators, anti-vibration mounts, acoustic enclosures and duct linings, and coordinate with the M&E design to achieve them. External plant noise is assessed separately under BS 4142 for planning.

Answer: Room acoustic design controls reverberation, echo and speech intelligibility so that a space is fit for its use. Consultants calculate reverberation times and specify absorptive finishes, diffusers and room shapes for spaces such as classrooms, offices, restaurants, atria, auditoria and sports halls. Good room acoustics improve comfort, productivity and accessibility for people with hearing impairments, and contribute to BREEAM and WELL credits.
