In order to promote timber construction, Hackney council is planning new policy on it. Because of the advantages considering embodied emissions, the tallest timber tower has already been boasted by the east London borough.
While the importance of sustainable development has been emphasized by government’s National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), the embodied energy is not included in Code for Sustainable Homes. However, taking embodied emissions into account is very important referring to the development proposals. Since the thickness of solid timber panels are between 100mm to 150 mm, its charring can be predicted. In addition, solid timbers have low risk of fire and can speed up the construction process. Moreover, the usage of timber with its special thermal insulation is able to make homes and buildings consuming less energy.
