A recent report on domestic heating for the Electricity Networks Association indicated that only 1% of the homes are connected to heat networks and this figure must be increased by 30 times by 2050 to meet UK’s carbon reduction requirement. Additionally, the report also stated the need for expanding heart networks for their potential in keeping open policy options to decarbonise heat.
The key advantage of using heat networks is it provides lower cost and higher efficiency heating option for householder without concerning about where the heat sources are. District heating will act as an important role to achieve national decarbonisation and energy-security targets. An expert mentioned that expansion of district heating is a good opportunity for UK to distribute the sources of heat and make the process more efficiency and also make company more competitive to develop the towns and cities in a sustainable way.
UK’s Department of Energy and Climate change has already recognised the higher efficiency and flexibility that heat networks have bring. While, more accurate on the scale of the challenge should be make not just be estimated.
