Large commercial owners prefer to install heat pumps instead of gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP). The reasons are:
– only low temperatures are needed
– the heat pump is situated at ground level near the house (usually in the garden) which makes it more efficient.
However, heat pumps use grid electricity that releases more CO2 than CHP. Only the decarbonisation of the grid would make it worth it over the CHP. If the Department for Energy and Climate Change’s (DECC) predictions are true and if the CO2 emissions decrease, the next two decades will see the disappearance of the gas-fired CHP over the heat pumps.
