The Committee on Climate Change recently produced a report highlighting the necessity for a global deal to achieve climate objectives by emission reductions. This would reduce the UK’s emissions, both domestic and imported as required by the Climate Change Act
The report recognises the difficulty that is faced by energy-intensive companies to remain competitive with the new energy and climate change policies that are being put in place. It is crucial to allow these industries to play a part in the low-carbon economy and support is needed. The government needs to follow through on its commitments to shield these industries from new energy costs by providing exemptions.
Over the past two decades there has been a 20% reduction in production emissions which has reduced the carbon footprint; however increased imports have counteracted this due to the shifts in manufacturing from the continuing globalization process.
