There is great savings that can be made through upgrading lighting to more efficient versions like LED and fluorescent lighting, but LED lighting can provide advantages other than energy savings.
Currently in retail halogen and metal halide lamps are commonly used due to their daylight-like qualities. LED fixtures are generally bad at rendering saturated red colours which are critical in several retail applications. New LED technology has the ability to change colour at the click of a button. For example:
- A Jewelers can switch display lights according whether it is gold or platinum in the cabinet.
- An interactive fitting room could allow clothes to be viewed at different times of the year.
- Colour is said to be able to evoke certain behavioral responses or moods which could increase sales.
- There are claims that certain LED lights don’t emit UV or IR rays which could reduce food spoilage or damage to delicate materials such as silk. This would make it acceptable to use lights in close proximity to products which could revolutionize in-store lighting schemes.
