Since the Energy Performance of Buildings regime came into effect in January 2013, the requirements for EPCs (Energy Performance Certificates) and DECs (Display Energy Certificate) have changed; all former regulations relating to EPCs and DECs are no longer in force. On 9 July 2015 another change came into force. Changes had to be made due to the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
DECs show the energy performance of a building, based on the actual metered energy consumption. They include an energy rating from A to G and an advisory report. DECs are displayed publicly to inform a building’s visitor about its energy consumption and raise public awareness of energy use.
The size of buildings, which require a DEC is getting smaller. Since 2013 buildings over 500m2 which are occupied by public authorities and frequently visited by the public require a DEC, since 9 July this year it is 250m2.
DECs for smaller public buildings will be valid for 10 years, whereas DECs for buildings over 1000m2 have a validity of one year.
