Save Mains Water. Save Money
We should all make the most of the rainwater coming off our own roof. We each use an average of 160 litres of tap water every day. But you don’t need drinking quality water brought in from miles away to flush WC’s, wash clothes, water the garden,clean the car, wash the patio or fill a pond. Use the rainwater off your own roof and save up to half your water bill.
The British government actively promotes the use of rainwater:
- New Building Regs (April 2010) make 125 litres per person per day the limit in all new buildings, enforceable in law.
- Code for Sustainable Homes aims for 80 litres per person per day at levels 5 and 6, 105 litres at level 3 and 4
- New Flood and Water Management Bill gives water companies greater powers during water shortages. Hosepipes will be banned for topping up pools, hot tubs, and decorative ponds, as well as for watering gardens and outdoor cleaning. This bill also favours rainwater harvesting to offset flood threats.
- Commercial and industrial businesses can benefit from tax rebate schemes.
- Planning applications with rainwater harvesting are viewed more favourably.
