Global Energy Demand: Key Predictions from the 2015 BP Energy Outlook

You are here:

The 2015 BP Energy Outlook 2035 predicts an average rise of 1.4% in global energy demand a year, which is 37% from 2013 to 2035. This growth is mainly driven by China and India.

According to the Outlook, the global energy demand growth is not uniform. E.g. in the EU the energy consumption declines. Furthermore, the US is likely to become self- sufficient in oil by 2035. What is to point out, is that worldwide energy flows are forecast to change. Energy flows will need to shift from west to east.

Coal will change its roll from the fastest growing fossil fuel to the slowest one, just slightly slower than oil. Natural gas is predicted to be the fastest growing fossil fuel until 2035, increasing by 1.9% a year. This rise is again driven by Asia. Half of the demand will be supplied by shale gas, the other half by rising conventional gas production. The rising demand in oil (0.8% a year until 2035) comes entirely from non- OECD countries.
