Renewable Energy Directive: Biofuels' Role in UK Transport Targets

You are here:

The Renewable Energy Directive (RED), put in place by the European Union will come into effect by the beginning of 2011. It sets the UK a target of 15% renewable energy in the overall energy supply. Meeting these targets will be crucial if the UK is to begin making the difficult transition to a low carbon economy and meet the government’s commitments to reduce Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The transport sector is responsible for a large proportion of the UK’s carbon emissions and under the RED the UK is set specific targets for using renewable energy specifically in transport. By 2020, 10% of energy used in land transport (including both road and rail) must come from renewable sources.

Although technologies like electric cars and hydrogen fuel cells may hold promise in the future, in the short and medium term it seems unlikely that either will account for any substantial proportion of UK vehicles.

In the short term, if we are to achieve substantial reductions in transport carbon emissions, it seems that bio-fuels could be one of the best and most practical ways of achieving them.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Renewable Energy Directive and Sustainable Biofuels

1 What is the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and its relevance to sustainable biofuels?

The Renewable Energy Directive (RED) is a European Union policy framework designed to promote renewable energy sources. It sets binding targets for the share of renewable energy in the EU's overall energy consumption and includes specific sustainability criteria for biofuels to ensure their environmental benefits.

2 What are the key sustainability criteria for biofuels under the Renewable Energy Directive?

Under the RED, biofuels must achieve significant greenhouse gas emission savings compared to fossil fuels. They also need to meet land-use criteria, ensuring they are not produced from land with high biodiversity value or high carbon stock, and adhere to minimum efficiency standards.

3 How does the Renewable Energy Directive impact energy policy and regulation for businesses?

The RED influences national energy policies by setting binding targets for renewable energy share, which in turn drives regulations for energy producers and consumers. Businesses involved in energy production, supply, or consumption must comply with these regulations, including those related to biofuel sourcing and usage.

4 What are the environmental benefits of sustainable biofuels as promoted by the RED?

Sustainable biofuels, when meeting the RED's criteria, contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the transport sector. They also help decrease reliance on fossil fuels and can support energy security, provided their production adheres to strict environmental and social standards.
